Continuing with the Squirrel theme, I almost ran over a squirrel today on my scooter. To evade me, it darted back from whence it came. I was not expecting that reaction. Turns out that instinctively, they to go back to their “safe spaces.” How often do we do same rather than face our fears ??
The squirrel scurries across the road
The scooter appears so suddenly,
It does not know the traffic code
It rushes back deliberately
Back towards familiar grass,
Outline of remembered tree,
Lucky this time with a pass
Towards familiar safety.
We laugh at the actions of the squirrel
From inside our advanced machines,
Yet we can do the same deferral
Get caught in limbo in between
We turn back towards the comfort
Toward old griefs old habits too
Cross the road? We just abort
Our journeys we don’t carry through
So when the pressure does attack
And builds and builds like a deluge
We freeze, we zigzag and circle back
Mistaking familiarity for refuge.
From fear to wisdom is the key
And learning in the midst of fear,
Asking will this road harm me?
Or a road that leads to a new frontier
