As a big soccer fan, I have a question. (Arsenal is my team {FYI} it started as a kid.) How does God decide who to favor with goals, who wins, who loses? Many players walk down the tunnel praying. And once they get on the pitch they point their index fingers to the heavens .
As players kneel and do the sign,
They send their prayers to the divine,
“Bless my feet to strike the ball,
Let me score, and score a haul.”
God scratches His head, bemused, perplexed,
Two teams praying, who’s turn is it next?
“Should I favor the red or favor the blue?
If both have strong faith, what shall I do?”
Perhaps He spins a holy wheel,
Decides the score by how He feels,
“An own goal here, a late VAR* twist,
Ruining the script I cannot resist”
And when the final whistle blows,
Do they thank Him or curse Him? We never will know
In victory smiles, but a loss it still stings—
Up there He’s laughing at these mortal things.
*A video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official, with independent access to match footage, who may assist the referee only in the event of a ‘clear and obvious error’ or ‘serious missed incident’ in relation to: a. Goal/no goal. b. Penalty/no penalty.
