A Plug for emojis

It took me a while to jump on the emoji bandwagon, and my many retirement events caused me to be the recipient of many. A simple emoji spreads love in fact analysis seems to show that individuals who expressed emotions with emojis were more likely to report more subjective well-being and fewer depressive symptoms. P.s. the picture of the ducks was taken early one morning on the golf course. Talk about love…..I wish I could describe to you the feeling I had when I saw this sight.

Update – May, 10, 2024 – Seems the Thunderbirds know too.

I have also learned a lot on planes. Traveling long distances alone can give you a lot of time for introspection.

I was traveling from Adelaide to Brussels (for a job interview – about 1994); when we stopped in Singapore I bought a new book, ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ (Stephen Covey) and I read it cover to cover between Singapore and Brussels.

He wrote that he read somewhere (he said could not remember where nor acknowledge the author) that the meaning of life is “To live, to love, to learn and to leave a legacy”.

De-sexualising ‘love’ and being able to say “I love you” to anyone, of any age, and any gender, and be totally sincere in saying it, required me to re-write a few personal paradigms. It was challenging and liberating.

I think the timing was perfect for me. I had just turned 40. I believe the first 40 years are an outward journey – a search for ‘stuff’; the next 40 years (if we are lucky enough to get them) are a search for meaning. The book also introduced me to the word ‘legacy’ in a personal sense. What had I done to make a difference? Big or small?

Years later I did a workshop which started with the request that you write you own eulogy (what would you like said about you at your funeral), then we were asked to write down what needed to be done in order to have those words said. An incredibly thought provoking exercise.
