I had a great day yesterday, an adventure of sorts, perfectly splendid.
Because of this ongoing pandemic, my local oncologist last week advised me not to fly to Mayo in MN. I was due to have a series of scans and blood work at the midpoint of my chemo treatment to see what was going on. Instead, Mayo arranged the tests at their Jacksonville FL campus.
I woke up at 4:45 AM, got my stuff together and was out the door at 5:00 AM. I had two appointments, one at 11:15, and one at 12:15. I was was back home at 5PM, a 642 mile round trip in half a day. I also had my bike in the back so I could get my daily 40 minute ride in, which I did around the campus and neighborhood before my first appointment! (I am on a 516 day streak of at least 30 minutes per day on my bike, not bad for cancer boy)
The plan was to stop only for gas, and get in and get out quickly, minimizing any risk of catching something nasty. That meant I needed provisions. Here’s my list, I share it with you so you can see what a demented (but not hungry,) man I am.
- Fruit; a banana, an apple and a slice of cantaloupe
- Snack; dried coconut, raisins, mango and brazil nuts
- Lunch; pork carnitas enchilada, two celery sticks and a carrot
- Afternoon Tea; A can of green tea and a nutella sandwich on sourdough ryvita.
- Water; a 1.5L bottle of water and a smaller one I could refill at Mayo
- Empty Gatorade bottle; for pee pee 🤷🏻♂️
I put the car on cruise control and cruised all the way there and back at 79 MPH (127 KPH). The best part? On the way home I got a message from Mayo alerting me to test results. I pulled over and checked my Mayo app. PSA down again to 0.71 ( it was 1.8 prior to starting chemo.)
BIG drive 🚙 – Little victories ✌️.
